Police warning after burglary spike

POLICE have warned householders to take steps to protect their valuables after reporting a rise in break-ins.

Rotherham South NPT said they were conducting extra patrols after “an increase in burglaries in the Wickersley, Hellaby and Maltby areas”.

A spokesperson said: “We are working closely with our colleagues across the force to bring those responsible to justice.”

Tips to protect your home include:

1. Changing all external door locks to anti-snap or anti-bump locks.

2. Not leaving keys in locks or leave keys on open view close to doors or windows.

3. Fitting sash jammers to all doors and ground floor windows.

4. Fitting external lighting that has motion-detection sensors fitted.

5. Considering intruder alarms and/or CCTV cameras.

6. Using timers to operate lighting within the home during the hours of darkness.

7. Closing blinds or curtains to living rooms before going out in the evening.

8. Fitting laminated window film to all ground floor windows and door panes to prevent them being broken.
