Police toast record drink-drive campaign

POLICE in South Yorkshire caught more drink drivers during June than in any previous month.

The county-wide campaign, which targeted areas where drink driving had commonly been reported, saw 2,763 drivers stopped and breathalysed with 5.8 per cent testing positive or refusing to provide a sample.

A further eight drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs.

The fail rate is identical to the national average, according to figures from the Association of Chief Police Officers.

Chf Insp Stuart Walne said: “By focusing on information on where drink driving is occurring we have arrested a higher proportion of offenders than in previous campaigns.

“Although the publicised campaign has finished we will continue targeting specific locations, dates and offenders, wherever drink driving is found we will prosecute.

“I'd like to thank the majority of the public for playing their part in making our roads safe—it really makes a difference.”

Anyone with information on drink or drug drivers is asked contact police on non-emergency number 101 or report them anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
