Officers were swanning about near Mexborough on Monday when they were flagged down for advice from a horse rider about what to do with a swan that was poorly near Denaby Ings Nature Reserve, said a spokeswoman from South Yorkshire Police.

Leaping into action, Sgt Mark Hitchenor took care of the swan and warmed him up in the van until the Yorkshire Swan and Wildlife Rescue Hospital arrived on scene.

They took the swan away for treatment and it is being cared for at the wildlife hospital.

"It is thought that pollution caused by recent flooding could be having an impact on local wildlife," said the spokeswoman.
