Police renew appeal to find hit and run driver

POLICE have renewed an appeal to find a hit-and-run driver who ran over and left a dad dead in the street.

Peter Topping (56) is believed to have been lying in a road when a vehicle went over him and left the scene six months ago.

The driver is thought to have continued along Co-Operative Street, Goldthorpe, before turning left into Doncaster Road.

Extensive enquiries and assistance from the community have failed to identify the vehicle or who was behind the wheel.

Sgt Andy Noble, from South Yorkshire Police’s Serious Collision Unit, said: “Peter was a well-known and well-liked member of the community and his family are finding it difficult coming to terms with his death.

“We hope that somebody will come forward with the information that will assist us.”

The incident happened shortly before 8.30pm on Thursday, December 29, 2011.

Anyone with information is urged to call 101 quoting incident 779 of that date.

And anyone giving information to Crimestoppers on 08800 555 111 which leads to an arrest and charge could receive a reward of up to £1,000.
