The car is thought to have left the scene at speed after dropping off two suspects in a field behind the Spring Lane property.

It is believed the pair, who both wore balaclavas, were picked up later by a white Transit van at about 5.45pm.

Eight men — aged between 18 and 43 — have all been bailed pending further enquiries.

Det Insp Richard Partridge said: “This was a very serious crime that targeted a family residence during daylight hours.

“The threats of violence in the presence of young children and the possession of weapons is a great cause for concern.

“We would like to encourage anyone with information about the vehicles to come forward to assist with our investigation.”

Police think the Audi, which has distinctively small alloy wheels, was stolen from Rotherham on August 25. It may have been used since around Barnsley and Doncaster.

Officers have urged anyone who may have seen the Audi, or anyone inside it, to call 101 quoting incident 857 of September 7.

Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
