Police plan blitz on metal thieves

POLICE have launched Operation Barbados to crack down on metal thefts in the Dearne Valley.

It follows two incidents in Goldthorpe and Dearne Safer Neighbourhood Team has the backing of BT and Yorkshire Electricity Distribution Limited.

Electric cables outside houses on Main Street were cut and stolen on March 20. Two days earlier, “substantial” amounts of telephone cables were taken from Commercial Road.

Insp Alan Simpson said: “To the police, this is simply unacceptable and there can be no excuse for stealing people’s property of any description.

“The operation involves overnight patrols of key areas, trying to tackle metal theft in the Dearne area.”

A YEDL spokesman said: “There is a great deal of danger in the theft of these cables both to members of the public and those taking the metal.

“Cutting and leaving live cables exposed poses an enormous risk, as it can be extremely dangerous to those who walk past.
