A POLICE officer and a teenager have sustained serious injuries after a road traffic collision in Rotherham last night.

Two vehicles, a silver Vauxhall Astra and a grey BMW 1 Series were reported to have been travelling along Warren Vale, heading towards the Woodman roundabout in Wath at 9.15pm.

On approach to the roundabout, the driver of the BMW lost control and veered onto the opposite side of the carriageway and into oncoming traffic, colliding with an unmarked police car, said a spokeswoman from South Yorkshire Police. 

"The driver of the BMW, an 18-year-old man, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital," added the spokeswoman. 

"The police officer also sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

"They both remain in hospital and are in a stable condition.

"The driver of the Vauxhall Astra, an 18-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of causing injury by dangerous driving."

Officers are appealing for witnesses and dash-cam footage.  

"We know there are not as many people out and about as usual, but officers are keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the area at the time, who witnessed the incident or may have dash-cam footage that can help with enquiries," the spokeswoman said.
