Police: Mexborough raid yielded £2m of cannabis

DRUGS police did more than knock at the door of an old bingo hall — as they found a full house of cannabis worth more than £2 million.

Men aged 29 and 38 were arrested on suspicion of producing class B drugs after the raid on the disused former Empire at Mexborough.

The operation at Swinton Road yesterday (18) followed weeks of work by Doncaster West Neighbourhood Policing Team, the force said.

Insp Adrian Luscombe said: “The groups of criminals who operate in our communities cause misery for many, and we are relentless in our pursuit of those who control their activity.

“Cannabis farms generate essential income that drives organised crime gang activity. It’s not a ‘harmless’ drug in any way, shape or form.

“Often, extremely vulnerable people are recruited to look after the grows, living in appalling conditions, full of fear.

“Because of this, we invest significant resources in disrupting this activity and identifying those responsible.”

The men arrested remained in custody yesterday morning (19). Information about drugs can be reported to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
