Seven months on, Mr Brogan was renuited with the pair on Tuesday at Maltby Police Station and congratulated them on the news they will receive a Royal Humane Society Award next year.

“I cannot thank Nicole and Dave enough,” Mr Brogan said.

“They came to my rescue when I needed it most.

“I am certain that it was the prompt action of these officers that saved my life.”

PC Palmowski from Maltby Police, was only ten months into the job when she saw Mr Brogan slumped up against a wall whilst on duty and pulled over to help.

“When I got to Jim his breathing was very shallow, and within seconds his ears went blue and he stopped breathing,” PC Palmowski said.

She immediately called an ambulance and began CPR.

Retired PC Hogan, said he had seen Mr Brogan running just minutes before the incident and rushed over to help PC Palmoski when he saw what had happened.

“It is very distressing to see anyone in that situation, and even though it felt like a long time, it wasn’t long until the ambulance arrived,” he said.

Mr Brogan, who is membership secretary for the Rotherham Harriers Running Club has been pounding the pavements for over 40 years, but said there were no big warning signs that led to his collapse.

“I didn’t really have any symptoms running up to what happpened, nothing that was any cause for concern,” Mr Brogan added.

He revealed that he could not remember anything from up to three days before the incident, and doctors had told him his aortic value in his heart failed, which was the cause of his cardiac arrest.

“I had to have major heart surgery, and I ended up being in hospital for a month but now I am feeling good.”,” Mr Brogan said.

Mr Brogan revealed the incident had not scared him off from going out running as his consultant, reassured him he was fit enough.

Asked about the award, Mr Hogan said the real reward was seeing Mr Brogan sat beside him looking wellm while PC Palmoski said she was “very proud and honoured” to be receiving the award, but felt like she was just doing her job like any other.

She said all the PCs at Maltby deserved an award and she wished everyone could get one.

Chief Supt Rob Odell said he couldn’t be more proud of the actions officers carry out on a daily basis.

“PC Palmowski’s actions on that day saved a man’s life, and we cannot underestimate how important her reaction was in that short space of time,” he said.

“Both PC Palmowski and Mr Hogan are great examples of the committment and dedications our officers have, even though they say they were just doing their job.”
