Police issue warning over Rothercare phone scam

SCAMMERS have been making calls pretending to be from Rothercare and asking for residents’ bank details.

Staff at Rothercare — Rotherham Council’s community alarm — do not make calls to sign people up to the service.

But scammers have claimed they are from the council, NHS or a private company and telling residents they are eligible for a pendant alarm.

PCSO Abby Grzesiek said: “Any payments relating to the Rothercare service would be arranged through official Rotherham Council invoices and documentation, and never by telephone.

“We advise should you receive a call like this, you do not share any of your personal details, including your bank details and you end the call as soon as possible.

“If you want to check if this was a legitimate call, please press the buzzer on any Rothercare equipment you already have to connect to a member of Rothercare staff who will provide reassurance and answer any questions or concerns.”

Alternatively, call Rothercare directly on 01709 371897.

“We encourage you to share this advice with family members, friends, or neighbours who may be targeted,” said PCSO Grzesiek.
