Police investigation finds children's playground fire was accidental

POLICE investigating a suspected arson incident at a children's playground have found the fire was started accidentally by a discarded cigarette.

Two fire crews dealt with the incident on land near the Manvers Arms pub, Harlington Road, at Adwick on Dearne yesterday (Thursday) afternoon.

Firefighters classed the incident as arson and the investigation was handed over to police.

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police said this afternoon: "Officers were called at 3.26pm on Thursday, May 16, to reports of a fire outside the Manvers Arms on Harlington Road.

"Officers reviewed CCTV footage of the incident, that showed that the fire was caused accidentally by a cigarette being put out. No further investigations will take place."
