Police investigate Rotherham MPs over electoral expenses

ROTHERHAM’S three MPs are being investigated by police over alleged electoral expenses fraud.

Rotherham MP Sarah Champion, Sir Kevin Barron — Rother Valley MP and John Healey — MP for Wentworth and Dearne have all denied the allegations.

South Yorkshire Police said it was investigating alleged fraud in Rotherham in the run-up to the 2015 general election.

A spokeswoman added: “The investigation remains ongoing and an application for an extension has been granted by the courts.”

Sir Kevin, who is also chairman of the House of Commons standards committee, said: “All my elections expenses were declared within the law and the rules set out by the Electoral Commission.”

Mr Healey said: “These allegations are simply wrong. My expenses for the 2015 general election were reported fully in accordance with the law and the rules set out by the Electoral Commission.”

Ms Champion, who is also shadow minister for preventing abuse, said: "All my elections expenses are declared within the law and the rules set out by the Electoral Commission and IPSA."
