Police hunt football hooligans

POLICE have pledged to track down the rowdy fans who caused trouble at Saturday’s Rotherham United v Millwall football match.

Senior officers said they would use CCTV footage to identify trouble causers following disorder at the game, which flared in the 85th minutes “when some supporters tried to gain access to fans in other parts of the ground”.

Millwall fans attempting to cross into the New York Stadium’s Family Stand were held back by police and stewards.

“No arrests were made at the match but CCTV footage will be used to try and identify supporters of both clubs who were involved in the disorder,” she said.

Chief Supt Jason Harwin said: “Officers have worked with both clubs prior to the game in an attempt to prevent such unacceptable behaviour.

“Again we see a minority of individuals spoil the event for many others. They aren’t a true representation of genuine football supporters and have no place in football. Such action cannot be tolerated.

“I thank the bravery and courage of stewards and police officers in tackling such criminal acts and we will now review evidence to identify and bring to justice those that are responsible for such criminal acts.”

Anyone with information about the incidents at and after the match is urged to telephone 101 quoting incident number 290 of February 28.
