Mexborough and Edlington are among five areas in which police have been carrying out Operation Shield.

Officers have marked property with Smartwater — a clear liquid which helps trace stolen goods — in 414 homes since October 1.

Det Chief Insp Paul Wilson said he was optimistic about the long-term effects, with burglary down 37 per cent so far in the four Doncaster areas compared with 2017.

He added: “Burglary is a hugely intrusive crime and can have a profound impact on victims. They often feel frightened and unsettled by what has happened.

“Being burgled at this time of year, in the run up to Christmas, can be especially traumatic. I hope Operation Shield will make people feel more confident that their property and homes are protected.”

Mexborough, Edlington, Hexthorpe and Balby — plus Gleadless in Sheffield — were selected for the operation because of high rates of crimes committed to fund drug abuse.

Det Chief Insp Lee Berry said: “We are encouraged by how receptive residents have been to Operation Shield.

“We’re not just posting leaflets through doors, we’re taking time to help the public mark their property and show them exactly how Smartwater works.
