Police hit the road in lorry to trap dangerous drivers

POLICE hired a lorry to keep a keen eye on drivers who might not be keeping their eyes on the road.

The Road Policing Group’s week-long crackdown on dangerous motorway drivers saw them monitoring commercial vehicle drivers.

When they spotted a motorist using a phone, eating and drinking or reading, patrol cars were informed and the vehicle pulled over.

Chief Supt Keith Lumley, head of operational support, added: “We’ve had some significant successes since the operation began on Monday.

“Any vehicle that is not being driven correctly can be a lethal weapon, especially large vehicles being driven at speed.

“By hiring our own large goods vehicle, we can help make South Yorkshire’s major roads safer for every motorist.

“It’s the first time that we’ve employed such a road policing tactic, but it may not be the last.”
