Several rooms were stuffed with growing plants, ranging from seedlings to mature bushes. Two men were arrested at the scene.

Inside the building were around 500 plants, along with tons of growing equipment, compost and fertilisers.

The dawn raid was carried out as part of Operation Duxford — a borough-wide crime-fighting day of action.

Another raid by officers on a Flanderwell house recovered six cannabis plants there.

Meanwhile, vehicle stops by traffic police checked for bald tyres and illegal use of red diesel.

Extra officers have been on the beat to engage with shoppers and provide crime-fighting advice. The operations will go on into the late evening.

Chief Supt Rob Odell said: “Officers are taking to the streets to bring an increased presence across the town and surrounding districts.

“There will be a number of crime prevention stalls and officers will be available to speak to residents and communities about the issues that affect you.

“If you do see an officer on patrol, or spot one of our crime prevention stalls, please come along and say hello.”
