Police appeal over trouble after town centre protest

POLICE are appealing for information on violence outside the William Fry pub on Saturday.

Bottles and bricks were thrown and “a number of people assaulted” when two groups of protesters clashed on Wellgate at around 3.30pm.

Officers have reviewed CCTV and are now conducting doorstep enquiries. They want to speak with anyone who witnessed the disorder.

Det Insp Steve Brookes said: “We know that there is at least one video of the incident circulating on social media pages.

“I’d urge anyone who filmed or photographed the disorder to get in touch, as this could contain vital evidence.”

He added: “It is miraculous nobody was seriously injured and we want to reassure the local community that we are making extensive enquiries to identify the individuals involved.

“In addition to the CCTV trawl and the investigation of material on social media, we are carrying out house-to-house enquiries and speaking with local businesses.”

Anyone with material which might assist police is asked to call 101 quoting incident number 230 of September 5, 2015.

Witnesses can email pictures or video to [email protected], quoting the same incident number.
