A man seen brutally assaulting a woman in the street is being sought by police after a witness of the incident expressed concern about her welfare.

Police were called after reports that the man had knocked the woman to the ground by delivering a headbutt before dragging the her along Ryton Road, North Anston, at around 10pm on Tuesday.

The couple are understood to have been arguing prior to the assault which took place in and area near to the village’s post office.

A police spokesman said: “The man knocked the woman to the ground, dragged her back up and apparently head-butted her to the ground again.

“The woman was then pulled along into Rackford Road where the couple turned left out of sight.”

He added: “The man was heard calling the woman a s**g and shouting ‘get up’ repeatedly. The woman was heard screaming and making noises as if in pain.”

A description of the couple stated that the female victim of the attack was in her mid to late 30s, had dark shoulder length hair, was of slim build and wearing a dressy top and no jacket.
