Police were called to reports of a “loud smash and explosion” at the McColl’s shop on Union Street, Harthill at 12.50am today.

"Around three men" used cutting equipment to remove the ATM before loading it into a red Audi and driving off in the direction of Kiveton Park, a police spokeswoman said.

Windows and shutters were also badly damaged by the burglars.

Cash boxes were later discovered on East Bawtry Road, according to an eyewitness, though police have not yet linked them to the Harthill raid.Officers were guarding the machine this morning, while colleagues investigated the raid through CCTV and door-to-door enquiries.

Anyone who heard or saw anything suspicious is urged to call police on 101, quoting incident 29 of July 3.
