Police aim to beat highway robbers

SECURITY vans transporting cash around South Yorkshire are to be given police escorts in the run-up to Christmas to deter robberies on the roads.

South Yorkshire Police will be working closely with the British Security Industry Association on a “Follow That Van” inititiative as part of Operation Monarch, which is aimed at cutting the number of “cash-in-transit” thefts and commercial robberies.

Det Con Nina Kitchener said: “This operation has proved successful in the past. There has not been a single cash-in-transit robbery in South Yorkshire in the four years that we’ve run Follow that Van and we’re hoping it will produce the same result this year.”

Anyone with any information about criminals linked to this kind of robbery is urged to report it to South Yorkshire Police on 0114 220 2020.
