Pledge from minister ahead of steel summit

BUSINESS minister Anna Soubry pledged to do all she can to support UK steel ahead of a crunch summit in Rotherham this week.

Anna Soubry will visit the Advanced Manufacturing Park on Friday to discuss national issues including job losses at Tata in Aldwarke.

In a Commons debate yesterday, Penistone and Stocksbridge MP Angela Smith said: “The UK steel industry faces volatile times.

“At the steel summit on Friday, will she please bring forward firm proposals for UK Government support for the steel industry? Otherwise it will just be a talking shop.”

Ms Soubry replied: “I can assure her that I take full responsibility for the importance of this sector and will do everything I can to make sure we support it.”

The four-hour summit will include MPs, steel bosses, trade union leaders and senior Government representatives.
