DOZENS of parents and children headed to a play centre to celebrate World Prematurity Day with other “premies” and their families.
The Big Apple play centre in Canklow hosted the event with staff from Rotherham NHS Foundations Trust's Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU).
There were treats including balloons and special gifts at the event for children who had once been treated at SCBU.
Victoria Hazeldine, the trust’s deputy chief nurse, also attended the event.
SCBU nursery nurse Julia Wing said: “Getting our amazing families back together to celebrate World Prematurity Day was fantastic.
“The wait was absolutely worth it. Seeing how all the babies have grown and getting the chance to catch up with everyone was such a treat for us all.
“Watching families who have shared these journeys either directly or just the experience with other families is what this day is all about.
“Not all of our families are Rotherham-based as there are times when unfortunately their local hospital just doesn’t have any space available and their journey begins at Rotherham SCBU, so we had several families make the journey back to see us.
“Many families said that they come back to see their SCBU family, and what a privilege this is for us all who work here to be referred to like that. It's a place that holds a special place in all our hearts.”
