The disused building is fenced off from the school’s new building and three fire crews from Maltby, Aston and Edlington were at the scene from 9pm until midnight.

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “The fire was in the main hall and firefighters were able to contain it to that area, but there has been quite a bit of smoke damage to the rest of the building.”

An investigation into the cause of the fire is now underway, she added, but the investigating officer said he believed the fire had been deliberately started.
