Pensioner in court over historic abuse of girl (11)

Barrie English (71), of Cedar Avenue, Alsager, Stoke-on-Trent, is charged with seven offences alleged to have occurred in Rotherham between 1995 and 1996.

Four of the offences allege English indecently assaulted the girl — said to have occurred on at least eight occasions in one count.

He is also charged with two counts of gross indecency — with one count alleging English committed the offence on at least five occasions — and one count of attempted rape.

He was sent for trial at Sheffield Crown Court where he will next appear on September 17.

He was granted unconditional bail.
