Firefighters from Rotherham, Dearne and Edlington stations were called to Flowitt Street at 6.30pm on Friday evening, a spokesperson for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said.

Crews quickly entered the property and found the man in his 80s in the living room but despite their best efforts they could not revive him, they added.

The spokesperson said the cause of the fire was unknown and an investigation with the police was ongoing, adding: "Our thoughts are with the man’s friends and family at this extremely sad time."

Anyone with concerns around fire safety following the fire can arrange a virtual home safety check, followed by an in-person safety visit.
