Delays on the Northern and Transpennine Express services affected travellers across Yorkshire.

But despite cancellations, including the busy 8.32am Sheffield to Rotherham service, Northern claimed services were “performing well” this morning.

A Northern spokesman said: “Of the 2,800 Northern services a day, very few have seen any changes as a result of the timetable coming in today (Monday).

“Services that have changed are generally performing well. The relatively small number of delays and cancellations are due to operational issues including driver sickness, signalling failure and train faults.”

The spokesman said the 8.32am service had been cancelled this morning — on its first day of operation — due to a “train fault”.

Peak commuter services run by Northern have also been cancelled this evening, including the 5.46pm and 6.18pm Rotherham to Sheffield services.

It comes as a double blow for commuters after the Tram Train service between Sheffield and Rotherham continued to be suspended today.

The National Rail timetable is changed in May and December each year.

Commuters shared train travel issues on social media with the hastag #northernfail.
