Paul Warne's challenge to his Rotherham United players after Bournemouth draw as rival boss talks of "direct" Millers

The 19th-placed Millers were at their hard-running, competitive best at AESSEAL New York Stadium and gave the Cherries, in second spot, as much trouble as they could handle as the contest ended 2-2.

“One swallow doesn't make a summer. The challenge is to play at this level over the next 30 games," said Warne.

“There were some outstanding performances. The scorers get the headlines but they were all headline-makers.

“I get frustrated when the lads don't play well because I know how good they are. This should give them confidence.”

Rotherham fell behind to a 20th-minute Junior Stanislas spot-kick but showed the character to hit back with a Freddie Ladapo double before Dominic Solanke restored parity.

“The first time Bournemouth went into our box was when we gave away the penalty," Warne said. "I was worried how that would affect the lads but I think they had gained confidence from how well they had started.

"I think we were more than deserving of a point. The man of the match was their goalkeeper. He made some good saves and performed really well.

"The fact we are making the keeper of arguably the best team in the make saves is testament to our lads.

“All our set-pieces were a little bit more on point. You need a good delivery and aggression in the box. That was a real weapon in our arsenal."

Meanwhile, Bournemouth manager Jason Tindall said of New York: "It's always a difficult place to come to with their style. You face a lot of long balls and a lot of direct play."

He added: “I am disappointed we haven't won the game. We had to stand up and do all the ugly stuff well. For large parts of the game, we did that. We will take the point and move on.

“It was an ugly game, to be honest. I didn't enjoy watching it. I thought the referee wasn't great for both sides. It was very stop-start. There was no flow.

“We showed great character to get ourselves back in and we take the point.

“The two goals we conceded from very poor from us. The first was from a throw-in and the organisation wasn't good. The second, we didn't defend anywhere near good enough.”
