Parkway roadworks finished early and below budget

COMPLICATED roadworks on the Parkway between Rotherham and Sheffield have been completed ahead of schedule and within budget.

The work on Old Flatts Bridge, which carries the A630 near junction 33 of the M1, has been finished a full four weeks early.

Started in September 2014, the carefully-planned bridge refurbishment led to temporary speed restrictions, but no complete lane closures.

The route carries over 50,000 vehicles every day, providing a key link between Rotherham, Sheffield and the M1 motorway.

Cllr Denise Lelliott, Rotherham Borough Council’s cabinet Member for housing and economy, said: “I am very pleased to see that this important engineering scheme was completed four weeks early and within budget.

“We thank motorists for their understanding while these works were taking place, however this was vital work to ensure the safety of the bridge on this major route for many years to come.”

She added: “If these works had not taken place it would have had serious implications for vehicles using the Parkway.”

The £4 million scheme was part-funded by the Department for Transport (DfT).

Old Flatts was one of two successful schemes submitted by the council to the DfT last year, attracting £5 million of DfT funding.

The local authority put in a further £1 million towards the works.

The other scheme involved changing the Pool Green roundabout in Masbrough to crossroads with traffic lights.

The new intersection has since been renamed New York Junction.
