The Millers deserved at least a draw against the big-spending Latics after dominating the first half and hitting the frame of the goal in the second.

However, they were breached in the last minute of five added on and barely had time to kick off before the final whistle blew.

There was encouragement to be taken from the overall display but Will Keane's headed winner from a free-kick at the death was a savage blow and left them tenth in the early table.

It was Wigan's first home match and kick-off had to be delayed by ten minutes to allow home fans queuing outside  to get into the DW Stadium.

More than 1,000 Rotherham supporters were already inside and making themselves heard in the away end.

In front of a loud, expectant crowd, the Latics got in behind the Millers' defence in the seventh minute and Will Keane had a clear sight of goal following Charlie Wyke's pull-back but could only volley wide.

Soon after, at the other end, Mickel Miller flashed a low, 18-yard effort just off target.

By the 20-minute mark Rotherham had taken the sting out Wigan's quick start and were doing most of the attacking.

Josh Kayode, on his league debut for the club, twice headed over and between those efforts Jamie Lindsay forced a flying save from Ben Amos with a curling shot.

In driving rain, the Millers remained on the front foot, with Chiedozie Ogbene tormenting Wigan's left flank, and Dan Barlaser forced Amos into action with a skidding 20-yard attempt.

Lindsay missed a great chance give the vistors a 38th-minute lead, firing over from close range after skipper Richard Wood had caused typical Wrecking-Ball chaos in the Latics' box.

Having dominated the half, Rotherham could have fallen behind right on half-time. Dan Barlaser should have cleared but was robbed by Charlie Wyke and it needed a crucial intervention from goalkeeper Viktor Johansson to keep the game goalless.

The Millers made only one change to the side that had opened the campaign with a 2-0 home win over Plymouth Argyle a week earlier.

Striker Freddie Ladapo was ill in the build-up to the match and dropped down to the substitutes bench as Kayode came in for his first Rotherham senior start.

The second half was a more even affair and the Millers had a huge let-off on 65 minutes when Keane somehow headed wide of an open net at the back post when a free-kick was helped into his path.

Five minutes later it was Rotherham almost going in front when Dan Barlaser's header from Michael Smith's cross crashed down off the woodwork and just failed to go over the line.

Paul Warne's side were heading for a hard-earned point when Keane made up for his earlier miss and sent them back across the M62 empty-handed.
