On-the-whistle report: Rotherham United 3 Sheffield Wednesday 0

A DRONE interrupted the South Yorkshire showdown but it was Rotherham United who were flying high as they ended a 44-year wait for a home league triumph over derby rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

The referee took both teams back down the tunnel after only five minutes at AESSEAL New York Stadium when a suspicious object was spotted in the sky and the Owls must have wished they'd stayed there as the Millers turned on the style when play resumed.

They were three goals ahead by half-time in the Championship clash and, with the visitors reduced to ten men, there was no way back for Wednesday.

A double from Jamie Lindsay and a Dan Barlaser penalty did the damage and the home side cruised through the second half to wrap up a first league success on their own turf against  the men from S6 since 1976.

The match got under way in bizarre circumstances as the drone sighting in stopped play for more than five minutes.

When the action resumed, the Millers needed only a matter of seconds to take the lead.

Freddie Ladapo's effort was blocked and when the ball flew into the air Jamie Lindsay headed it over Cameron Dawson into the South Stand net.

The Owls responded with off-targets shots fom Jack Marriott and Kadeem Harris before Joey Pelupessy wasn't far away with a 12th-minute low, skidding 20-yarder.

Wednesday were having more attempts on goal but were being troubled at the back by the pace of Rotherham's attacks.

Just after the half-hour mark, Marriott got something on Callum Paterson's cross and Jamal Blackman made the save, then it was Dawson's turn to be called upon as he palmed away Joe Mattock's curling free-kick.

Rotherham doubled their advantage on 40 minutes as Tom Lees received a straight red card for bringing down Florian Jozefzoon, adding to Owls woes as his centre-half partner, Aden Flint, had already gone off injured.

Dan Barlaser blasted in from the spot and then played a huge part in a third Millers goal before the break.

His sweet shot was parried by Dawson and Lindsay was on hand to steer home the ball for his second of the evening.

There was still time before the referee blew for the interval for Michael Ihiekwe's header to require a Dawson stop.

Manager Paul Warne had made two changes to the side that played well in defeat at Reading on Saturday.

Mickel Miller came in on the left wing - Ben Wiles moving into his favoured central-midfield role - and Ladapo was named up front, with Shaun MacDonald and Michael Smith dropping to the bench.

Warne's side were untroubled throughout the second half and substitute Michael Smith thought he'd made it 4-0 only to be denied by a point-blank Dawson save in the 77th minute.

Miller caught the eye all evening with his trickery and driving runs and his 80th-minute charge set up George Hirst, on against his boyhood club, who was denied by another Dawson stop.

The win lifted Rotherham to 17th in the table and their joy at the final whistle was evident.

A dream night in the drone derby.

Goals: Lindsay 6, 45, Barlaser pen 40 (Rotherham).
