The Millers created plenty of chances at windswept AESSEAL New York Stadium yet couldn't finish off the Dons.

They remain at the summit by a point but the chasing pack are gathering.

Top scorer Freddie Ladapo put Paul Warne's men in front early on but was guilty of a glaring second-half miss when the game was there for the taking.

Despite losing only once in their last 15 league outings, Rotherham could slip into second spot if Coventry beat Sunderland tomorrow.

The Millers swept into a ten-minute lead through Ladapo who rifled home his 17th goal of the campaign.

Set free by a superb ball from Jamie Lindsay, he cut inside from the left and despatched a low effort past Lee Nicholls low into the bottom corner.

Lindsay, making first first start since December because of Dan Barlaser's ankle injury, almost doubled the advantage six minutes later when he was played in by Ben Wiles' deft touch but Nicholls was equal to the shot.

MK levelled in the 22 minute when Rhys Healy turned the Millers' defence inside out before firing emphatically beyond Dan Iversen.

With the home side back on the attack, Michael Smith should have done better than head wide Wiles' 26th-minute corner and soon after Ladapo headed off target when Wiles supplied the cross.

Smith looked set to head Rotherham back into the lead as he rose to meet Chiedozie Ogbene's exquisite cross in the 41st minute but Nicholls pulled off a stunning close-range stop.

There had been a pre-match minute's silence for fan Andy Wilson-Storey who had tragically died, aged 42, after collapsing at Accrington Stanley a week earlier and in the 42nd minute all four sides of New York rose for 60 seconds of applause.

Just before the hour mark, Ladapo simply had to score goal number 18 but the forward somehow steered the ball wide of a gaping net after a brilliant run and cut-back by Ogbene.

After Millers' shouts for a penalty for handball had gone unheeded, another good opportunity went begging in the 73rd minute when Smith headed Ogbene's cross over the bar before Wiles shot just off target from 20 yards.

MK might have snatched an unlikely late winner but Iversen twice did superbly, first keeping Ben Gladwin's deflected 87th-minute shot shot and then saving with his his feet when Alex Gilbey was clean though.
