Town arrived in first place but were no match for the rampant Millers who could have won by a much greater margin.

The old warrior, Richard Wood, was the man who did the damage, heading in from close range just before the interval to give Paul Warne's side their sixth win in their last seven league outings.

Promotion songs rang out around New York on the first Tuesday-night home league fixture all season.

Rotherham were by far the superior side in the first half and deserved to go in at half-time leading by more than a single goal.

They withstood Ipswich's time-wasting and niggling, which went unpunished by referee Antony Coggins, and could have been 3-0 ahead by the break.

Kyle Vassell, back in the side after a calf injury, smacked the crossbar from Dan Barlaser's quick feed at an 11th-minute free-kick.

Eight minutes later, Barlaser bypassed the visitors' defence with a stunning ball over the top only for Hakeeb Adelakun to pass up a golden opportunity by taking a heavy touch and then shooting too close to Will Norris.

Three minutes before the interval came the breakthrough.

Barlaser swung in a corner, Michael's Smith header was blocked by Norris and as the ball rose into the air there was Wood a yard from the line to force the ball home with his head.

The Millers stayed on the front foot in the second half and were inches away from a another goal on 57 minutes.

Adelakun's cross from the left took a deflection and agonisingly bounced just too high for the head of Chiedozie Ogbene who was running in at the back post.

Vassell's overhead kick was superbly kept out by James Wilson before a second Wood header was ruled out for an infringement.

Town were surviving an onslaught and only the quality and desperation of their defending were denying Warne's men a second goal.

Substitute Ben Wiles went close with a volley as the final quarter an hour approached and then Adelakun rattled the bar with a thundering 30-yard effort.

Dan Iversen comfortably kept out Kayden Jackson's near-post effort in the 80th minute and that was the first save he had had to make.

He was called into much more spectacular action four minutes later as he tipped over Luke Garbutt's 25-yard free-kick.

Rotherham lived dangerously towards the end and Ipswich sub James Norwood hit the post from a seemingly-impossible angle in time added on.

But the final whistle sounded soon afterwards and only one thing mattered: top spot for the Millers.
