The Millers had controlled proceedings and looked set to take the lead they deserved on the stroke of half-time when Kieran Sadlier stepped up to take a spot-kick on the stroke of half-time.

But the substitute saw his attempt saved and the visitors made the most of their reprieve to score two unanswered goals after the break.

The second was a disaster for Rotherham as Ben Wiles' loss of concentration saw him needlessly shed possession and then goalkeeper Viktor Johansson failed to hold on to an easy shot to gift Wednesday their clincher.

Kick-off was delayed for 15 minutes because turnstile problems, in a repeat of opening day, meant that fans were facing long queues to get in.

Once the action finally did begin, Rotherham wasted no time in going on the attack.

Only 34 seconds had gone when Chiedozie Ogbene caused problems for the visitors' defence and Ben Wiles shot over the bar from the edge of the area.

The atmosphere at New York was pulsating and the home side's start continued to match it, with the Owls pinned back and Josh Kayode heading over an Ogbene cross on three minutes.

Wednesday responded with a Florian Kamberi effort over the bar after a dangerous run four minutes later and then Michael Smith headed too high at the other end.

Less than ten minutes had been played and the packed stadium, spared the rain that had been forecast, was catching its breath.

The Millers remained on top, forcing a succession of corners and free-kicks, but suffered a huge blow midway through the half when dangerman Ogbene departed injured, handing a big chance to Sadlier to stake his claim for more game-time.

As the interval approached, the sub twisted and turned before firing an 18-yard shot wide.

In time added on, he had a golden chance to open the scoring when Kayode's driving run was brought to a stop by Paterson and the referee pointed to the spot.

Sadlier struck the penalty well enough but Bailey Peacock-Farrell made a flying save to his right to send the relieved visitors in at the break much happier than the hosts who had dominated proceedings for no reward.

Striker Freddie Ladapo was back in the squad after tonsillitis but fit enough only for a place on the bench, which meant that Kayode made a third successive league start.

New boys Ollie Rathbone and Shane Ferguson kept their places after the midweek win at Morecambe and skipper Richard Wood was restored to the starting line-up at the heart of a three-man central defence.

Wednesday went ahead in the 50th minute against the run of play when Paterson outmuscled Wes Harding and crossed for Kamberi to strike from close range.

As the rain arrived, any Rotherham opportunity seemed to be falling the way of Sadlier. After Kayode had wasted a 58th-minute chance to play in Rathbone on goal, the ball fell to the winger who drove wide in front of the North Stand.

Just as in the first half, the Millers were piling on the pressure, only this time the Owls had a priceless lead in their pocket.

Paul Warne's side were indebted to Johansson as the visitors made a rare break and the Swede did brilliantly to spread himself and foil Lee Gregory in a one-on-one.

Rotherham were straight back in the Wednesday half in search of an equaliser, but calamity struck when Wiles and Johansson combined to awful effect in the 77th minute to hand victory to the Owls.

Wiles' error put the visitors on the attack and when Johansson somehow contrived to spill Dennis Adeniran's low, soft effort Lee Gregory was in and the contest was over.
