The visitors, who arrived in South Yorkshire in seventh spot and unbeaten in their last seven matches, scored twice in the second half to see off a game Millers side.

It was the fourth time in four attempts since becoming manager that Warne has tasted defeat against the West London club.

Substitute Mickel Miller conceded a penalty and was sent off after only 11 minutes on the pitch after collecting two yellow cards.

Rotherham matched last season's beaten play-off finalists in the first half but fell behind to Marcus Forss's 57th-minute strike.

In the 82nd minute, Miller was adjudged to have nudged over Sergi Canos and trooped forlornly from the field as Ivan Toney scored to double the visitors' advantage from the spot.

The loss saw Warne's men slip a place to 20th in the table.

The Millers gave Brentford anxious moments with balls into the box in the early exchanges during which neither goalkeeper was called into serious action.

Jamal Blackman easily gathered a tame Ethan Pinnock header from a corner and the same Bees player was high and wide with another headed attempt at the back post as he got on the end of Bryan Mbeumo's free-kick.

Jamie Lindsay's low 15th-minute shot for the home side was heading goalwards until it took  deflection for a corner.

Lindsay swung in a superb curling cross nine minutes later but Angus MacDonald couldn't keep his header below the bar.

Brentford's Vitaly Janelt added to the number of efforts missing the target when his shot from the edge of a box following a corner ended up nowhere near the net.

Rotherham came close to breaking the deadlock in the 41st minute as Lindsay picked Janelt's pocket and freed Matt Crooks to run in from the left and force a sharp save from David Raya.

Despite injury concerns on the eve of the clash, Warne made only one change to the side that had drawn 2-2 with AFC Bournemouth, bringing in Richard Wood for the suspended Michael Ihiekwe and sticking with the new 3-5-2 formation that had worked so well against the Cherries.

Blackman had his first shot to save just after the break, spreading himself well to deny Marcus Forss following a Bees breakaway, before Lindsay managed to keep a bouncing ball down only to shoot too close to Raya.

The Millers had kept dangerman Toney quiet but the 12-goal marksman provided a deft lay-back for Forss to opening the scoring.

Then he made no mistake from the spot for his 13th strike of the campaign and guarantee Warne's wait for even a point against the Bees would go on.
