The Millers were beaten 2-1 at Peterborough United and slipped out of top spot as a result.

Both sides had gone into the contest as the division's most prolific teams, with 48 goals each, but it was Posh who prevailed on an afternoon when Paul Warne's men were below the high standards they have set since Christmas.

Rotherham got off to the worst possible start and found themselves a goal down after less than two minutes.

Siriki Dembele dispossessed Chiedozie Ogbene and crossed low for Ivan Toney to steer home from a tight angle at the back post.

The day grew even worse for the Millers 21 minutes later when another sharp Peterborough break saw Sammie Szmodics sprung clear to beat Dan Iversen.

But the visitors forced their way back into the contest with ten minutes of the first half remaining.

Hakeeb Adelakun's long-range shot had been tipped round the post and when Dan Barlaser delivered the corner Michael Ihiekwe was on hand to drive the ball into the net.

The home side started the second half the brighter of the two teams and Iversen had to be at his best to claw away Toney's header in the 51st minute.

Rotherham had another let-off on 70 minutes when Dembele dragged his effort wide with the goal at his mercy.

However, the Millers, roared on by a bumper away following, fought straight back and Michael Smith almost brought them level a minute later.

His header was destined for the bottom corner before Posh goalkeeper Christy Pym spectacularly intervened.

Rotherham pushed hard towards the end but had a loud shout for handball rejected and never truly looked like finding their way through Peterborough's defence again.
