ONE person has died after a collision between two lorries on the M1 in Rotherham this morning, police have confirmed.

No details of the deceased have yet been released and family members are being contacted by officers.

The death occurred in a collision on a stretch of road which had only just re-opened after an earlier accident.

Police closed off the northbound carriageway between junctions 33 and 34, from Catcliffe to Tinsley, at around 7.30am after two lorries collided.

An HGV driver trapped in his cab was freed by firefighters from Aston Park and Maltby stations and taken to hospital.

The second crash happened just after the motorway had re-opened after a three-car collision at 12.30am.

A black BMW, a light coloured Seat Alhambra people carrier and a black Seat Leon were involved in the earlier smash.

Another three vehicles got caught up in it after getting hit by debris.

Police said seven people, including four children, were taken to hospital.

None of them have life threatening injuries but one of the youngsters, an 11-year-old boy, suffered a serious head injury.

He is being treated in Rotherham General Hospital.

The others were taken to Sheffield Children’s Hospital and the Northern General Hospital.

Witnesses to the smash or anyone who saw the vehicles beforehand should call South Yorkshire Police on 0114 2202970.
