One in 10 miss dental treatment over appointment fears

MORE than one in ten Rotherham residents do not go to the dentist because they don’t belive they will get an NHS appointment, new figures show.

Statistics show that 12 per cent believe there are no practices accepting patients.

But the NHS statistics show that none of those questioned were on an NHS waiting list.

And 89 per cent of those who attempted to get an appointment at some point in the last two years were successful.

Semina Makhani, NHS Rotherham’s specialist registrar in dental public health, said: “We have plenty of dentists available in Rotherham who are ready to accept NHS patients and a number of practices who are actively seeking to boost their lists.

“If patients wish to find a NHS dentist, they simply need to call the Health Advice Centre on 01709 423030 between 9am and 5pm weekdays, where they will be given information and advice on how they can access a NHS dentist.”

Other reasons given making an appointment included one-fifth of respondents who said they had not needed to, 16 per cent who stayed with their surgery when it went private and nine per cent who “don’t like going”.
