Oil bath blaze at Corus steelworks

BLACK smoke billowed from a building at a Rotherham steelworks when fire broke out during a process designed cool hot metal.

Four fire engines attended the Corus steelworks, off Aldwarke Lane, when an oil bath used to cool newly created bars of metal caught fire at around 9.30am on Tuesday morning.

Crews from Rotherham, Darnall and Elm Lane fire stations tackled the blaze using foam and were able to leave the scene two hours later.

A spokeswoman for Corus said: “Thankfully the fire was not as dramatic as it perhaps appeared and nobody was injured in the incident.”
