Ofsted praises 'extraordinary' Newman School

Head teacher Margaret O’Hara said staff, pupils and governors were all delighted with the exemplary inspection.

The 82-pupil Whiston school held a craft, dance and sports day as a celebration, when Rotherham referee took charge of a football friendly between the youngsters.

Mrs O’Hara. “All the children at the school celebrated their own outstanding achievements in a film presentation and through practical and fun activities.

She added: “Inspectors visited us during the week before Christmas and said it was an amazing place, where pupils are happy, sensible, courteous and friendly.

“They said that there was an outstanding quality of provision and care ensuring excellent outcomes for children from foundation to sixth form.

“The only recommendation made was to promote the wealth of good practice via international and community partnership links.”

Ofsted’s report praised the rigorous self-evaluation by staff, who develop “excellent” relationships with the youngsters.

Inspector Michele Crichton said: “Newman is an extraordinary school.

“It consistently provides an outstanding quality of provision and care and ensures excellent outcomes for pupils from the early years foundation stage through to the sixth form.

“Leaders are committed to raising achievement and continual improvement through constant and rigorous self-evaluation, monitoring and action planning at all levels.

“Improvements are also driven by constantly refining the innovative and enterprising curriculum.”

All but one of Rotherham’s special schools are currently rated outstanding by Ofsted.
