ROTHERHAM United are turning their attention to signing a striker after stepping up summer recruitment by making three signings this week.

Midfielders Oliver Rathbone and Hakeem Odoffin and centre-half Rarmani Edmonds-Green all came in during a flurry of activity as the Millers count down to Saturday’s League One opening day.

Now, manager Paul Warne wants to add a centre-forward, probably in a loan deal, to his squad before the close of the transfer window at the end of the month.

“I met a player this week and spoke to him about potentially coming to play for us and I’m just waiting for him to make his decision,” he said.

“He’s got a few clubs after him. Hopefully he’ll choose us but we’ve got other players in mind.

“I think there will be more movement in the loan market as August goes on. I can see a lot happening in the last two weeks of August. I’m confident of getting a striker before the window shuts but it might be a bit more of a waiting game. Fortunately, we’ve already got three really good strikers at the club.”

A permanent transfer for a young left-back is all but completed. However, there has been a delay and the player is not expected to join up with his new teammates until Monday.

“It’s just dragged on a little bit. He won’t be here for the weekend,” Warne said. “The deal is agreed and I’m not expecting anything to go wrong.”

Rathbone, Odoffin and Edmonds-Green are all in contention to make debuts against Plymouth Argyle at AESSEAL New York Stadium this weekend.

“They all have an opportunity to get into the squad,” Warne said. “Out of the three of them, Hakeem hasn’t been able to train as much recently.

“He might be a little bit behind the curve but we’ll see how he is over the course of the week.

“We don’t carry a lot of players so they’ve got a good chance.”

The desire to bring in a new right-back has lessened. Odoffin offers cover there and the Millers already have Wes Harding for that position.

Rotherham, who have now made five pre-season signings, are also at home to Accrington Stanley on Tuesday in the first round of the Carabao Cup.
