New York Tavern is town’s top ale house

The New York Tavern, run by Parkgate’s Chantry Brewery, received the honour of Town Pub of the Year from the ale experts of Rotherham CAMRA.

There has been a pub on the site, which previously housed the Prince of Wales Feathers, since 1856.

The original New York Tavern was also opened nearby in 1856, but was demolished in 1970.

Brewing brothers Mick and Kevin Warburton and friend Paul Vernon bought the Feathers in 2013 and named if after the latter establishment.

It features ten hand-pumped ales and ciders, including five Chantry beers and five guest brews.

Just down Westgate, beer lovers awarded the Cutler’s Arms — another Chantry pub — second place in the town-wide contest.

The same pub was also crowned CAMRA Pub of the Season for spring 2017.

Mick Warburton said: “It’s fantastic news and I’m overjoyed that all the hard work at both pubs has been recognised.

“Landlord Chris Brown does a fantastic job at the New York Tavern and all the staff and management at the Cutlers work incredibly hard, so everyone is pleased with the award.”

He added: “The support that the people of Rotherham have given us has been amazing, not only at the pubs, but the brewery also.”

Other honours awarded by Rotherham CAMRA included Rural Pub of the Year for the Wath Tap, Wath-upon-Dearne, with the Duke of Leeds in Wales in second place.

Club of the Year went to Wickersley Old Cricket Club, while Most Improved Pub was awarded to the Three Horseshoes in Wickersley.
