New date for Rotherham Hospice Light up a Life service

SNOW forced a charity to postpone its annual memorial service—but the Rotherham Hospice’s Light up a Life appeal still managed to raise more than £26,000.

Every year the Rotherham Hospice hosts a candle ceremony as part of the event which sees people dedicate a light in remembrance of their loved one.

This year’s ceremony was supposed to take place on December 5 but heavy snow forced organisers to reschedule.

The service has now been re-arranged for 3pm on January 23, at Talbot Lane Methodist Church, Moorgate Street.

A spokeswoman for the hospice said: “This year we have had overwhelming support from the community for the appeal.

“With the generosity from our supporters the appeal has raised an incredible £26,619.02.

“These funds will go directly to support end of life care at the hospice and will help us achieve the estimated running costs of £3 million this year.”

She added: “By giving a donation our supporters were able to dedicate a light in remembrance of their loved ones or to honour someone special.

“The hospice shone brightly through the dark winter nights by hundreds of dedicated lights as a symbol of peoples love.”

Hospice patron Lady Scarbrough and the Mayor of Rotherham Cllr Rose McNeely are planning to attend the service which will feature hymns and readings.
