New brown bin collection gets off to a rubbish start in Wickersley

THE council has apologised after its new paid-for brown bin collection service got off to rubbish start.

Peter Hasman’s new brown bin was sat outside his Churchfield Drive home in Wickersley for four days after his street’s collection was missed on Friday.

Mr Hasman (67) said he had rung Streetpride to complain — but when the garden waste bin was still sat outside his home on Monday afternoon, he turned to the Advertiser for help.

Ms Hasman said: “I can see five brown bins from my window."

The £39-a-year garden waste collection service was introduced to cut £1.3 million a year from the council’s bins bill and for Rotherham’s recycling rate to meet the Government’s 50 per cent target by 2020.

Residents opting in will be sent a brown bin, which will be emptied monthly from November to March and fortnightly between April and October.

“We’re paying for the service and not getting it. This is the first collection we have had and the second brown bin I was sent as the first one they delivered was split,” Ms Hasman said.

“It’s really annoying paying for a service and not getting it.”

Ms Hasman’s bin was eventually collected on Tuesday morning — four days late.

Rotherham Council’s assistant director of community safety and street scene Tom Smith apologised to the residents and said it was “rare” collections were missed.

“On the rare occasion that a bin collection is missed, we advise residents to leave the bin at the kerbside and report the missed collection online at www.rotherham.gov.uk/bins.” he said.

“Garden recycling bins in Churchfield Drive have now been collected and we apologise to residents for any inconvenience caused.”
