New battle looming over future of Rotherham green belt

NEW fears have been voiced for the future of green belt land at the centre of a huge uproar two years ago.

Rotherham Borough Council has revealed scaled down blueprint for 2,400 homes on the land at Bassingthorpe Farm, Greasbrough.

But campaigners say they are still not being given sufficient information about the details of the plans.

Simon Collett, from the campaign group Save Our Green Belt, said: “It’s the scale of it that worries us.

“We just don’t seem to be getting the real answers to our genuine concerns.

“It’s just the same as two years ago.”

In 2009, the council unveiled proposals for 3,600 houses to be built across the borough between  2012 and 2027.

Now the council says that it has taken note of the feedback last time and, as a result of changes in Government regional policy, it has been able to reduce local housing needs, with the new overall target down 27 per cent.

But the council warns that growth in Rotherham’s urban area is essential to the “lifeblood” of the town.
