New artwork unveiled at Ulley Country Park

SUNSHINE filled Ulley reservoir’s old overflow as a mosaic depicting the devastating floods was unveiled.

Artist Coralie Turner’s piece was revealed at the official opening of the country park’s new performance spot, called the Spillway.

The area was taken out of service after the 2007 floods and will host various events during the summer.

Paul Nash, secretary of the Friends of Ulley Country Park, said: “We came up with the idea of developing an artistic addition for the Spillway.

“We commissioned Coralie to do a mosaic and she has been brilliant. Now we have a lasting piece depicting the floods.

“It’s tremendous. I had seen it while it was being developed but there was still a great moment when the curtain came off.”

Mini mosaics have also been created by Canklow Woods Primary, Newman School, and Wickersley, Clifton and Rawmarsh Community Schools.

The project was also supported by four parish councils, RMBC and Ulley Sailing Club. Young musicians from Clifton performed and the Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Eve Rose Keenan, attended the opening event on Wednesday.

The next event at the Spillway will be a performance by the band Kahootz during the friends’ cafe day on May 20.

A new spillway was built as part of the £4.9 million flood repairs, which were completed in 2010.
