Neighbour puts out chip pan blaze

A ROTHERHAM couple had their neighbour to thank after his quick thinking helped them escape a chip pan fire.

The incident happened yesterday evening, when the couple from Bay Tree Avenue, Sunnyside, went to sleep as the chip pan remained on.

After smoke alarms failed to wake them, an alert neighbour rushed to the rescue by putting a blanket over the the pan and using a fire extinguisher to put the blaze out.

Firefighters from Maltby and Rotherham were called to the incident at 7.10pm and took the pan outside before ventilating the property.

They warned that chip pan fires cost lives, and urged people to replace them with a deep fat fryer or use oven chips instead.

The residents got out unharmed.
