Murder probe after man stabbed in street

A SOUTH Yorkshire man stabbed to death on Saturday has been named as 36-year-old Philip Alan Smith.

Mr Smith, of Stotfold Drive, Thurnscoe, was found injured in Church Street around 4.30pm on Saturday after a disturbance near the junction with Houghton Road.

He was taken to Barnsley Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

A post mortem carried out yesterday found that Mr Smith died as a result of being stabbed.

One man arrested on suspicion of murder remains in police custody today.

Three other men arrested on suspicion of violent disorder have been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Specialist officers are now liaising closely with Mr Smith’s family and appealing for witnesses to the incident.

Det Supt Andy Thompson, the senior investigating officer, said: “Extensive house-to-house and forensic enquiries have been taking place to establish the facts in this case.

“I still wish to hear from anyone who has any information or who witnessed the disturbance.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room at South Yorkshire Police in confidence on 01709 443507.

Alternatively contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
