Mum's maggots fear over Dinnington fly-tipping hotspot

MAGGOTS and rats are the main worries for a mum fed-up with the garden next door becoming a hub for fly-tippers.

Emma Lewis (pictured), of Doe Quarry Lane, Dinnington, said the back garden next to hers had been piled high with waste since the tenants were kicked out last month.

“The house is boarded up and people are coming and using the garden as a tip,” she said.

“I have got on to the council’s environmental health team but they’ve done nothing about it.”

Emma, a mum of five children aged between eight months and ten years, said tippers were getting to the disused garden via a snicket down the back of the houses before throwing their rubbish over the fence.

“There are black bags, fridge freezers, bins, whatever you can think of. People are just getting whatever they can find and chucking it,” she said.

“My biggest worry for my kids is that we’re going to end up with maggots and rats. That’s unless they go climbing on it like some other kids have.”

Tom Smith, Rotherham Borough Council’s assistant director for community safety and street scene, said: “We were made aware of the issues at the empty property in June, and this is now being dealt with by our selective licensing team, who have been out to visit the property and talk to the neighbours.

“Officers are now in the process of contacting the landlord and we will be looking to resolve the situation as soon as possible.”
