Mum and son rescued from arson attack

FIREFIGHTERS rescued a mum and her nine-year-old son from a bedroom window as they were “minutes away from death” after arsonists struck at their home.

The pair were trapped at the house on Ash Grove, Kiveton Park, after placing towels and pillows at the bottom of the bedroom door to stem the spread of smoke on advice from the fire service’s control operator.

Fire crews from Mosborough and Aston Park used a ladder to reach them, before they were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

Watch manager Mark Jones said: “The firefighters who rescued the lady and her son saw inside the bedroom and it was full of smoke.

"I think they only had a couple more minutes left in the room before it got very serious.

“The lady was woken by her smoke alarm but after going to get her son from another bedroom they realised they were trapped because the smoke was coming up the stairs.”

The control operator who answered the 999 call said: “I spoke to both the lady and her son, and although very frightened they did exactly as I asked, helping to stay safe until the fire crews arrived.”

Fire crews were called at around 2.40am and left the scene at around 4am. A fire investigation is now due to take place.
