The motorway was closed in both directions between junctions 34 and 35.

Highways England said it would take until about 11am to clear all the trapped traffic.

A spokesman said emergency services including the air ambulance had been called.

He added: “Traffic is being diverted via local routes. Road users are advised to consider alternative routes and allow additional time for their journeys.”
